Clean up your Desktop

Using your computer’s desktop efficiently is mostly a matter of thinking how you would use a real desk. Likely you keep your current work on the desk, do something similar with folders for current projects on your computer desktop. With your real desk, you probably put away things you no longer need, that is when you would drag project folders to your Documents on your computer. If there are items that you are not sure where to file yet, put them in a temporary folder on the Desktop, something called “items to review and throw away.” Things that you no longer ever need in real life likely go in the trash, do that also on your computer.

ISPs finally have to publish the equivalent of a nutrition label for their different plans, to cover in a consistent way speeds, prices, data allowances, discounts, and all fees and taxes. You have to be able to see this label before you check out, this makes comparing differently marketed plans much simpler.

The Windows 11 ads seem to have finally come to Windows 10. And, reportedly there is not a button to stop showing this “ad” that lets you know that the end of Windows 10 is coming (not until 10/14/2025, still over a year away.) If your Windows 10 PC is still working fine and meeting all your needs, hold off on buying a replacement and just ignore those ads. Extend your use of that computer until the last possible day.

Oops, I just closed all my tabs when I accidentally close my browser, what to do? Reopen your browser and use ctrl-shift-t (Windows) or command-shift-t (macOS) and likely all your tabs reopen. If this ability to always reopen existing tabs, find out how to enable “Continue where you left off” in Chrome and Edge, or “Open previous windows and tabs” in Firefox.

If your iPhone or iPad is stolen there is a scam you should be aware of. Sometime after you have gotten a new phone, you might start getting texts from a stranger saying they bought your stolen iPhone and they have access to all your stuff on that phone. They helpfully talk you through how to remove the iPhone from your Apple account so that you can erase it. At that point, you have reset the phone in a way they can sell it and activate it with another Apple ID. When you remove that stolen iPhone from the Find My service provided by Apple, you make it possible for someone else to register that phone with Apple. Sometimes that is what you want, but not when the phone was stolen.

To-do lists are very common for computer using people, one tip I just came across is to start them the night before. Write down what you want to do the next day and maybe you won’t worry about it during the night. The next morning you can prioritize and detail what you need to get done.

Google’s Fact Check Tools, https://toolbox.google.com/factcheck/, is one more way to double-check the veracity what you find on the Internet.
